Northwich Victoria made no mistake at the second time of asking in their FA Trophy Third Round Qualifying replay against Ilkeston on Monday night, with a 5-1 victory on the road.
The two sides fought out a 1-1 draw in their original clash on Saturday but the replay, at Ilkeston’s New Manor Ground, ended in a far more convincing result.
The club’s relieved secretary Dave Thomas was at both games and he believes his side are benefiting from playing away from home.
“It was a great result, as on the weekend we didn’t play well and we got an equaliser with just nine minutes left,” he said.
“When we have come away from home, in the league and in cups, we have played better football because teams have not just shut up shop.
“When teams come to our place they set up to defend and we often struggle to break them down. When we play away, however, teams are more attacking and adventurous and that allows us more space.”
Chris Budrys, who started the weekend’s clash on the bench, struck a first half brace to give Andy Preece’s side a comfortable lead at the interval.
Nathan Woolfe got Vics’ second half off to a dream start when he gave his side a three-goal cushion two minutes after the restart.
Ilkeston reduced the deficit from the penalty spot thanks to Joseph Maguire to give them a glimmer of hope but Wayne Riley enjoyed a fruitful end to the game with two goals late on.
“It was a much more convincing result and performance and I think the manager will be happy with the lads,” added Thomas.
“We want to keep on doing well in the league as a priority, but The Trophy can be a great competition for teams at our level.”
Northwich will now play host to Fleetwood Town on 10 December in the First Round Proper.
